All lessons are a half hour session, once a week. Teachers are independent, so their rates vary.

Tom Blickenstaff
classical, electric, and acoustic guitar, piano, beginning snare drum

Tom has been teaching at Carpenter’s since 1994. Prior to teaching, he was a guitar and piano student at Carpenter’s taking lessons from Alan Mason. He graduated from South Hagerstown High in 1988. He continued his education at Hagerstown Junior College. While teaching at Carpenter’s, he continued his musical education by taking private piano lessons from Dr. James Douthit at Shepherd College. Tom has performed in local rock bands. He was the lead guitarist and keyboardist with Morgana LeFay and Shakey Jake. He teaches Classical guitar and piano from beginning to advanced students. He is also fluent in classical rock, metal, progressive rock and blues guitar.

Schedule availability: Monday - Friday
Rate: $80 per month

Arnie Helmick
bass, guitar

Arnie graduated from Frostburg University in 1987. He has been performing professionally for over 20 years in bands in Cumberland, Hagerstown and beyond. If you have been to the Blues Fest, you have seen him perform w/ Duffy Kane, Stack o' Blues, Koko Blue and Byther Smith. Arnie is currently very busy playing with the Holders, Stack o' Blues, and the Prophets of Abstract Truth. He also finds time to play bass/guitar for the praise band at Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown. Arnie started teaching at Carpenter's in 1993. He teaches a variety of styles: blues, rock, jazz, funk and reggae.

Schedule availability: Monday - Thursday
Rate: $17 per 1/2 hour lesson

Julie Belle Huff
flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone

Julie Belle is a graduate of Smithsburg High School and Gettysburg College with a B.S. in Music Education. In high school, she received the John Phillips Sousa Award and toured seven Western European countries with American Music Abroad. She has been involved in the Hagerstown Municipal Band, Williamsport Community Band, Hagerstown Choral Arts, and several ensembles. Julie Belle taught flute at Mercersburg Academy and was an instructor at Hagerstown Community College in the Symphony Music Program for very young children. She performs with Arnie Helmick in the Matster's Quartet and with Jeff Lockwood in the Giuliani Duo. She played on the documentary soundtrack for Jefferson Co., WV Historical Society which was composed by Alan Mason. In 2006, she formed the Sonare Flute Quartet with 3 of her most advanced students. Julie Belle is a free-lance flutist and has been teaching woodwind and beginner brass at Carpenter's since 1994.

Jeremy Izer
guitar

Jeremy's journey into music started with a guitar at the age of 10. He later enrolled in Cumberland Valley School of Music. He then moved on to study at Guitar Works (a G.I.T. based method of study) in Harrisburg for a year. After that, he was accepted into Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. During college breaks, Jeremy taught at CVSM. He has played with a few Christian Bands and has performed solo Jazz gigs. Jeremy teaches electric and acoustic guitar from classic rock to jazz.

Jeff Lockwood
acoustic, classical and electric guitar

Jeff has been teaching for 18 years. His styles include rock and classical music. For two years, 1993-1995, he had the honor of receiving lessons from Alex Skolnick, guitarist for Testament. He toured for six years with heavy metal band OUTLANDER and released 2 albums under the Nordic Records label in Napa, CA. He was a session player for Premier Gospel Recordings in LA, and and in-house guitarist for D.A.P. Recordings in Fairfield, CA. Jeff then studied under Dr. Leonardo Garcia, who was a student of Eliot Fisk.He left California and moved to West Virginia. Jeff is teaching at Inwood Performing Arts Company as well as teaching at Carpenter's.

Lewis Palladino
guitar,bass

If anyone has been out to see a band, they have seen Lew at some point. In 1969, he was playing guitar with the band Fantastic Flames. After a few more years and a few more bands, he wound up playing in Shooting Star from 1974 - 1988. After making some personnel changes, the band changed its name to the Rhythm Kings. It is one of the most popular blues/rock bands in the Tri-State area. Lew started teaching guitar in 1974 at Machen Music. He has also been teaching at St. James School since 1994. We were thrilled to add him to our teaching staff in 2001. He teaches blues, classic rock, rock, & contemporary styles.

David Wonnacott
acoustic, classical and electric guitar

Dave graduated with a BA in Music Business Management from Berklee College of Music in 1998. He has been teaching private guitar lessons since 1993. Dave's students will be taught harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic training and ear training, as well as reading and writing. He prefers students 10 years old and up.

Ted Shusterman
acoustic, classical, electric guitar, chapman stick, two hand tapping, and music theory

Ted has been playing guitar for 15 years. He has performed in local bands and guitar ensembles, and holds a BA in Guitar Performance from Shepherd University. He has studied guitar with Glenn Caluda, William Feasely, and Maurice Arenas. His styles include classical guitar, rock, and metal, as well as teaching music theory and note reading. Each lesson is tailored to the needs of the student, focusing on the fundamentals of music while keeping the student's goals in mind.

Jonas Dawson
piano, music theory, aural skills

As the newest addition to the Carpenter teaching family, Jonas Dawson looks forward to helping any age of student learn the subtle nuances of music through the piano. Jonas is within credits of a B.A. in Piano Performance from Shepherd University, having studied Piano with Dr. Robert Scott Beard and Composition/Jazz Piano with Dr. Mark Cook. Jonas also possesses a B.S. in Computer and Information Science, and is working on a Masters in Software Engineering. Jonas is currently a Collegiate Member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, the Music Director for numerous theater organizations, and teaches Applied Piano, Musical Theater, Music Theory and computer courses at Hagerstown Community College. Through his diverse education, Jonas believes that he can relate music to any student through various methods.
